A propositional vision for investment in lifelong learning as a driver for urban regeneration in a post-industrial economy – reanimating disused building stock with community-led cultural activity.

Studio Weave were appointed to imagine a vision for long-term legacy to follow Hull's 2017 UK Capital of Culture nomination. Working in collaboration with ‘No Limits’ – the Learning and Participation element of the festival team – the commission proposes to address questions about how to support ongoing accessibility of programme outcomes such as creative networks.
Throughout the period of the bid, nomination and productions; opportunities for participation in a range of activities were supported by dedicated funding. Our scope included consideration for how after the festival programme completed, the legacy team might strategically conceive the delivery of sustainable networks of knowledge and skill exchange across the city.

Presenting a new approach to urban regeneration of the city centre, the proposition imagines five new public education institutes offering forms of learning not currently delivered through formal education, and inviting local people – no matter what age or background – to continue developing their talents. At its core, the vision sets out an approach to investing in nurturing existing communities to determine their own forms of value and wealth – as opposed to assuming dependence upon external capital investment.
