Studio Weave were commissioned to develop The ‘Hackney Colour Design Code’ as a manual to instruct the phased implementation of a new colour palette across Hackney housing estates. The guide was subsequently addended with a complementary ‘Hackney Signage Design Code’, also by Studio Weave.

The colour palette for each estate is deduced as a unique response to its age, composition and typology – using a systematised logic based on harmonious colour balance. Each estate colour scheme comprises between three and five colours applied to all paintable elements. Development of the logic and palette involved auditing the typical elements and materials found across all estates and classifying them by type. A hierarchy was established to specify: background colours, complement colours and highlight colours.
